Corten Steel Garden Art
Posted by BeachComber on 8th Dec 2022
For the best garden and wall art, it all starts with steel. Here at Beachcomber, we use Corten Steel®.
What is corten steel®?
Also known as weathering steel – Corten® or cor-ten® steel contains 5% copper which develops a protective rust-coloured patina over time. This means it takes on a more natural appearance whilst looking after itself. It's the ideal long-term guest for your garden.
How we create our art
First, our in-house designers draw concept sketches. They draw on inspiration from nature at our solar-powered workshop in Carterton.
We are surrounded by native birds, mountains, and the beautiful yet ferocious coasts of Ngawi, Flatpoint, Tora, Castlepoint and Riversdale all close by.
- We then use computer software to refine the image, to make sure we have the most eye-catching designs for your home and outdoor settings. Because we are a small business, we can get our initial concepts through to a finished product rapidly.
- We then work on a template to ensure the plasma cutter knows where to cut and to get the best yield from the material with a minimum of waste.
Steel is an expensive resource and we want to make sure that all of our processes are as efficient as possible. We use 2.5-metre sheets of steel that are 2.5mm thick.
- The steel is then put into our Plasma Cutter. This New Zealand-made piece of machinery is controlled lightning! It slices through the metal with ease and creates intricate designs with precision.
- Once cut, the shapes are put into the Vibro to deburr with a media to make the edges smooth. We let the machine do the hard work to make sure we get the desired result – a smooth, safe beautiful piece of art
